120 dead after plane crash in South Korea, two in hospital

At least 120 people died in a plane crash at Muan Airport in South Korea, the local fire brigade said, and two survivors were taken to hospital, according to a report.

There were a total of 181 people on board the plane. The fire brigade fear that, apart from the two survivors, the 179 passengers and crew members have been left dead.

The survivors were passengers and a flight attendant, Yonhap news agency said, citing the authorities. The report said one of the two found smoke coming from one of the engines.

Several witnesses on the ground also said they saw flames coming from one of the turbines and heard several loud bangs, Yonhap said.

Based on initial findings, the authorities assume that the pilots were unable to extend the landing gear due to the bird strike that caused the accident.
