27 years ago, record holder for the longest cutscene in a video game Hideo Kojima said that the “one thing” he didn't want in Metal Gear Solid was characters just “shaking at each other for 4 or 5 minutes”


Hideo Kojima is known for his long shots these days, but he was once much more cautious of them.

There are a lot of players who don't like long cuts. After all, the point of a game is to play, right? Metal gear solid creator Hideo Kojima hasn't cared about that for long though, with the fourth game in the franchise holding the record for the longest continuous cut in a game any ever at a whopping 71 minutes to date. Except, funnily enough, Kojima didn't always seem too keen on including such long shots. As discovered by Shmupulations (many thanks, Radar games), in an interview with Famitsu in 1997, the iconic game developer talked about everything Metal gear solid before it was released on the original PlayStation.

Interestingly, the subject of the scenes came up, where Kojima had this to say: “The one thing I want to avoid, though, are those difficult scenes where characters are just flirting with each other.” together for 4 or 5 minutes. Today we can clearly see that Kojima thinks differently about cutscenes, and with Death series 2 on the way sometime next year (with a strange photomode to boot), only time will tell if he beats his record. Fingers crossed he does, if only because it would be funny.
