Former world champions Phil Taylor and Raymond van Barneveld have led the tributes to Wayne Mardle's family, following the death of his wife Donna ahead of the World Darts Championship.
Donna Mardle died aged 52 earlier this week, after a short illness, with Sky Sports Darts announcing her death during the opening day broadcast of this year's tournament at Alexandra Palace.
“Wayne is the heart and soul of everything we do here at Sky Sports Darts, but the heart of his world, his wonderful wife Donna, tragically passed away earlier this week after a short illness, ” said presenter Emma Paton during the broadcast.
“We will remember Donna throughout this tournament. Wayne, you are in our thoughts, you are in our hearts, we love you very much and we will see you very soon.”
The PDC released a short statement after announcing the death, which said: “All our thoughts and sympathies are with Wayne Mardle and his family, following the death of his wife Donna earlier this week.
The darting world was quick to express their condolences on social media, with players – past and present – and fans sending wishes of support to Mardle and his family.
Taylor, the 16-time world champion, said on X: “It is so sad to hear of the death of Donna Mardle. Thoughts and prayers go out to the entire family.
Five-time world champion Van Barneveld said: “I was shocked and saddened to hear of Donna Mardle's death tonight. Sending condolences and thoughts to you @Wayne501Mardle and his family.”
Former BDO world champion Stephen Bunting, who was also part of this year's line-up, added: “My thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies are with Wayne and his family on the tragic loss of his beloved wife and best friend Donna.”
Steve Beaton, who ended a streak of 33 consecutive matches in the World Darts Championship when he failed to qualify, said: “Life is so short. Love your friend.”
