Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs got a scare on Sunday when the star quarterback suffered an ankle injury in the Super Bowl champions' 21-7 victory against the Cleveland Browns.
Mahomes was left limping after being hit by multiple Browns defenders midway through the fourth quarter, being helped off the field as Carson Wentz watched the game at quarterback .
“I was trying to make a play,” Mahomes said. “When I was throwing the ball I was hit, and I didn't see it, it felt like someone hit me from behind as well, so it kind of rolled up.
“That kind of thing happens in football. Tried to connect back but it obviously hurt a bit. Now we will get after the rehabilitation part of it and try to be ready for next week.
“Usually the day after is when you get a good feel for it. I feel like I could have finished the game in different situations. But I thought that it was a smart decision to send Carson in. He has played a lot of football, and he finished the game well.”
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Sunday afternoon that X-rays on the ankle came back negative, with Mahomes now considered week-to-week.
“Patrick, he hurt his right ankle. It's not broken, but it's sore,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said. “He'll start the rehab part of it as we go along, and then we'll have to see how he does down the road here.”
Mahomes finished the game 19 of 38 for 159 yards and two touchdowns to Noah Gray and JuJu Smith-Schuster as the Chiefs improved to 13-1.
The defending champs are scheduled to have a back-to-back against the Houston Texans at Arrowhead next week before visiting the Pittsburgh Steelers on Christmas Day.
