Ukraine is ready to provide humanitarian aid to Syria, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday.
In coordination with his government, he said that food from the Grain from Ukraine program could be used to help the people of Syria, Zelensky said in his video speech this afternoon.
“Now we can help the Syrians with wheat, flour and our Ukrainian oil – our products that are used around the world to ensure food security,” Zelensky said.
In particular, he said, the logistics must be approved by Syrian representatives. “We will definitely support this region until peace there becomes a cornerstone for our transition to true peace,” Zelensky said.
The humanitarian program, which was started in 2022, mandates that donor countries and other organizations buy agricultural products directly from Ukrainian producers and send them to countries in need, especially in Africa and Asia.
Syria's long-time ruler, Bashar al-Assad, was ousted a few days ago after a surprise attack by Islamist rebels.
Large parts of the country were devastated by a civil war in the country following the Arab Spring in 2011. After initial successes by the rebels, the rebellion was largely suppressed with the military support of Russia.
