President-elect Donald Trump On Wednesday he came out against a Republican-backed government spending bill, alongside Elon Musk'crusade against the package and raise the chances of a government shutdown.

Trump opposes the continuing resolution put forward by Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, according to a source familiar with the president-elect's thinking, who spoke on condition of anonymity to report on private discussions.

The source confirmed that Trump said the Fox News host it is “absolutely against” the CR.

Later on Wednesday afternoon, said the Vice President and the General. JD VanceR-Ohio, a joint statement from him and Trump said politicians should “pass a quick bill” that doesn't give Democrats “everything they want.”

“Republicans want to support our farmers, pay for disaster relief, and set our country up for success in 2025. The only way to do that is with a temporary GUN funding bill DEMOCRAT REVOLUTION along with an increase in the debt ceiling,” read the statement posted by Vance on X.

“Anything else is a betrayal of our country,” their statement read.

Musk's persistent push throughout the day to tank the 1,547-page bill, which he says is full of pork-barrel waste, is being heavily criticized by his opponents.

If legislation is not passed by the House and Senate and signed by the president to fund the government after Friday night, the federal government would begin implementing a partial shutdown which may include employee leave.

Musk didn't seem concerned about shutting down the government a week before Christmas.

“Government 'shutdown' (which doesn't actually shut down emergency operations btw) is totally better than passing a terrible bill,” Musk wrote in one of dozens of X posts against the CR.

In another postMusk said that “no bills should pass” by Congress until Trump takes office on January 20.

A growing number of Republican lawmakers have sided with Musk, possibly forcing Johnson, R-La., to give up the resolution using a so-called “suspension” of the rules process. traditional House.

Passing suspended bills requires the support of two-thirds of the House, but passes other procedural steps.

Democrats would have to join Republicans to block the bill, and as of Wednesday morning, suspended passage of the CR appeared to be the most likely path to government funding.
