Montenegro shooting spree sees gunman kill 12 including 2 children before turning gun on himself

Podgorica, Montenegro – A gunman who went on a shooting spree at a restaurant in southern Montenegro killed a total of 12 people, including two children, a prosecutor said Thursday.

“Twelve people were killed, two of them children,” prosecutor Andrijana Nastic told reporters in Cetinje, raising the previous toll of at least 10 from Wednesday's attack.

The gunman died after being shot in the head, police said early Thursday.

The killing spree began around 5:30 pm local time (1630 GMT) on Wednesday, in the town of Bajice near the southern town of Cetinje, according to police.

The victims were killed in five different places, with the first four in the restaurant, said the prosecutor.

“Each place was searched and evidence was collected. The prosecutor and the police are proceeding to find out the circumstances under which the incident took place,” she said.

Four people were also seriously injured and taken to a hospital in the capital, Podgorica.

The lives of three of them were still in danger, Health Minister Vojislav Simun said on Thursday.

Police denied “a reference between organized criminal groups”.

They said guns used were illegal.

The government announced three days of national mourning from Thursday.

Mass shootings are rare in the small Balkan country.
