- Ethan Peck urges Amazon and Microsoft to explore Bitcoin to fight inflation and preserve shareholder value.
- Shareholder proposals can drive corporate Bitcoin adoption but face asset managers and technical hurdles.
Corporate America is facing a compelling question: Should tech giants like Microsoft and Amazon add Bitcoin to their balance sheets? Ethan Peck, Assistant Director of the Free Enterprise Project, has helped this argument build steam.
Peck said in a recent interview with Anthony Pompliano on his YouTube channel his efforts to introduce shareholder proposals asking large companies to invest in Bitcoin. Ultimately, by addressing financial inefficiencies caused by inflation and underperforming bonds, benefits accrue to stockholders.
Peck's method derives from a basic but modern concept: inflation inevitably destroys value in companies with large cash reserves.
His idea calls for Bitcoin as a hedge fund to maximize the preservation and expansion of shareholder wealth. But why are companies willing to accept this view, and exactly how do these shareholder movements work?
Evaluating Bitcoin: Microsoft's Missed Opportunity?
With its large cash reserves, Microsoft clearly the target of Peck's first Bitcoin proposal. Cash reserves and low yield bonds are falling short of inflation as he told Pompliano. A steady decline in shareholder value has followed since.
Although Peck's proposal did not call for a quick response, he urged businesses to consider the possibility of Bitcoin in their financial plan. “A corporation's fiduciary duty to its shareholders,” Peck said. He said:
“They are neglecting their duty to maximize returns if they are not exploring Bitcoin as a solution.”
While this argument makes sense, Microsoft and other corporate behemoths have shown resistance. The idea was rejected by the Microsoft board, and only 0.5% of the shareholders approved.
But as Peck pointed out, institutional fund managers like BlackRock and Vanguard who had large blocks of votes were largely responsible for the low percentage. Their votes sometimes reflect broader conservative views than necessarily the interests of individual shareholders.
Peck's Grassroots Push for Bitcoin at Amazon
After Microsoft, Peck turned his attention to Amazona company with just as much cash on hand. The aim remains to encourage businesses to reconsider their financial plans as inflation continues to rise. More than just ideas, Peck's campaigns are supporting a popular movement where retail investors can join the campaign for Bitcoin adoption.
For Peck, teamwork is paramount. “The more people who submit proposals, the stronger the message,” he said. Although only three people make up his team at the Free Enterprise Project, their combined efforts over the past three years has produced over 150 ideas across various industries.
Peck also appreciates the help of the Bitcoin community since he understands how eager and possible it is to spread the word.
Submitting shareholder proposals is a complex process with many problems, most of which are proposals on minor technical issues, such as border crossings words or neglect to meet strict deadlines, which are regularly rejected by businesses. But Peck's experience with these challenges has made him a leading advocate for corporate Bitcoin adoption.
Why are large companies delaying the adoption of Bitcoin
Against such businesses Microsoft and Amazon Bitcoin adoption reflects a broader cultural and financial issue. Many times citing risks or volatility, large fund managers and investment stewardship departments are reluctant to promote creative ideas.
Peck describes this as a “big time,” similar to companies that overlook the opportunities presented by new technology such as streaming or cell phones.
Peck remains optimistic for the future and sees a moment when American business welcomes Bitcoin not only for its financial benefits but also for its compatibility with prudent monetary policies. “It's a process,” he acknowledged. “We can build a movement, however, with more transparency and education.”
There are important stakes. If even a small percentage of the S&P 500 gives Bitcoin some financial resources, the resulting effects could reshape corporate finance.
For Peck, the main goals are obvious: to empower owners, encourage creativity, and allow businesses to fulfill their fiduciary duties in an ever-changing financial environment.
