Yoon to avoid the first hearing in the impeachment trial over safety concerns

Suspended South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol will not attend the first hearing in his trial, local media reported Sunday.

Yoon would not attend due to concerns about his safety, the Yonhap news agency said, citing the president's lawyer.

On Tuesday, the Constitutional Court is expected to begin the impeachment process against Yoon, who issued a short-term martial law order on December 3.

The court will decide whether to uphold his trial or reinstate him.

Yoon, 64, remains in his home, protected by high walls and guarded by dozens of members of the presidential security service.

Hundreds of his supporters are also camping outside in front of the building's entrance.

Lawmakers removed Yoon from office pending further information on allegations of abuse of power and sedition in mid-December.
