When I landed in Cancún in December (2024) and headed north to Costa Mujeres, I wanted to see how SLS Playa Mujeres, the first all-inclusive resort with the SLS brand, would fare. blending style, convenience, and that signature SLS buzz . Recently opened in November 2024, the property is still working out a few kinks in terms of service, but that is often to be expected from a modern hotel. Having reviewed dozens of high-end resorts in Mexico over the years—from boutique hideaways to five-star enclaves—I'm always curious to see if a newcomer can come to deliver a unique vibe. I'm happy to say that SLS Playa Mujeres feels both new and familiar, offering a sophisticated beach vacation that stays true to SLS' design-forward DNA.
Great introduction
Located in a private gated area of the Costa Mujeres – just about a 30-minute drive from Cancún International Airport – SLS Playa Mujeres is set amidst lush greenery and sleek architecture. Living roofs, swaying palm trees, and monastic gardens weave a nature-oriented element into the resort's contemporary silhouette. Despite its quietness, you are not cut off from the main attractions of the area: the ferry terminal to Isla Mujeres is very close if you want to snorkel, eat local, or explore vibrant street art on the island.
Inside, you'll find a sleek yet welcoming design that reflects the SLS's cosmopolitan roots. Warm woods, airy design, and thoughtful lighting ensure that the resort feels contemporary without being stark. When you add the friendly staff, the stage is set for an elegant, easy escape – although there are still a few soft spots as the resort finds its footing.
Pet Friendly (with caveats)
Since I always travel with my service dog Poppy, I am especially aware of how resorts I visit handle pet policies (different from service dog policies). SLS Playa Mujeres allows dogs, but with restrictions: puppies are not allowed in pool areas or restaurants, not even outdoor seating. If you're specifically looking for a hotel where puppies get five-star pampering, this section has dog friendly resorts. But if your holiday is more about the SLS experience, and you want your pup with you in your own place – Poppy would love to sit on our furnished balcony with the sea breeze and a zoomie in the early morning morning runs on the beach – the resort still fits the bill.
Pools, parties, and the Privilege lounge
One of the main attractions of the tropical route is the view of the pool, and SLS Playa Mujeres delivery with several options. It features the vibrant adults-only lounge, which is the third of its kind at SLS worldwide (joining Dubai and Baha Mar). Expect curated music, a fabulous crowd, and bartenders mixing up inventive cocktails throughout the day. I liked the energetic vibe – especially if you are here with friends or for a small party.
If you prefer less excitement, you can slip away to quieter pools further away from the main action or hit the family-friendly pool area if you're traveling with kids. Although the poolside snack selection could be more extensive, the staff are friendly and attentive, and the cocktails I've sampled have never disappointed.
Beach for warm days
Although the pools are popular, the resort beach offers a more relaxed experience. The resort sits behind a beautiful white sandy beach that meets clear turquoise water. The sea was also relatively free of the Sargassum (sea grass) that often plagues the beaches of the Cancun area. Rows of inviting cabanas and lounges line the shore, and waiters drop by to refresh drinks or bring light bites. It is a great place for those who like to wade in calm waves or who need time to go out under the Caribbean sun.
If you fancy a bit of adventure, consider water sports such as paddle boarding or jet ski hire, or hop over to Isla Mujeres for a day of exploring. But I admit, there is something happy about staying put with a cold mezcal cocktail (there are plenty of top labels here) and the ocean moving at your feet.
SLS Elite for an enhanced experience
If you're celebrating a special occasion – or if you want to ring the bell – consider upgrading to an SLS Elite room or suite. These accommodations come with benefits such as private lounge access, preferred seating, exclusive beach space, and personal check-in. Some rooms span two levels, with private rooftop jacuzzis and panoramic sea views, perfect for an intimate gathering or group of friends getaway. SLS Elite guests also enjoy butler service, an authentic spirit package, long-haul airport transfers, and the Ciel Spa thermal pool experience. You can even find special reusable water bottles and chic beach totes to use around the resort – a subtle touch emphasizing sustainability and style.
In my opinion, the Elite Series is a perfect fit for couples on honeymoon, bachelorette parties aiming for that VIP vibe, or any traveler who wants to add a layer of pampered luxury to him. It ensures that you don't have to worry about booking dinners at peak times, and the special services make your stay feel that much more personal.
18 eating and drinking destinations
An all-inclusive experience succeeds or fails on its dining, and SLS Playa Mujeres aims to impress with 18 restaurants and bars scattered around the property. Caracol, sponsored by James Beard Award winner chef Hugo Ortega of Puebla, quickly became my standout. I tasted typical Mexican dishes that featured bold flavors, fresh seafood, and innovative twists on classic recipes.
If you're in the mood for a steak, Union is the resort's answer to a high-quality steakhouse, with well-prepared cuts and a decent wine selection. Meanwhile, Fi'lia satisfies cravings for handmade pasta and wood-fired pizzas – perfectly paired with smoky mezcal, my personal favorite spirit. Although I didn't get to check out every place, the overall scene is diverse enough to keep most palates happy.
Family friendship meets social perspective
One thing I noticed and appreciated about SLS Playa Mujeres is how it attracts a variety of guests – families, couples, solo travelers, and groups of friends. The resort includes amenities such as a kids' club, a designated family pool, and activities that cater to younger guests, making it a great choice if you're traveling with children. Meanwhile, the adults-only areas offer that grown-up vibe when you need a break. During my visit, I saw a destination wedding in full swing, bachelorette parties toasting by the pool, and families exploring the beach – you can find the pace that suits you.
The blessing of the spa
Between relaxing by the pool, strolls on the beach, and late night cocktails, make time for Ciel Spa. Its clear and relaxed design features natural textures that set a soothing tone. I gave myself a deep massage and felt my travel tension melt away. The CBD hot stone treatment or Royal Citrus Ritual also gets good reviews. Groups of friends or couples may want to book treatments together for an extra dose of pampering.
