All PEI schools are closed Monday due to weather, with a winter storm hitting the west


All schools across Prince Edward Island are closed Monday as the winter storm brings challenging conditions to much of the province, with the western region battered by snow.

Environment Canada has issued a winter storm warning for Prince County, where another 10 centimeters of snow is expected. Strong winds combined with fresh fluffy snow will reduce visibility when blowing snow.

By 8 a.m., the plow dispatcher in Prince County said all the plows were done, and the roads in Prince County were a bit better. The halo is able to do a part of each area, and the visibility is slightly improved. However, the halo dispatcher said it would take the morning to clear the stuff completely.

“Conditions will improve this afternoon as snowfall rates begin to moderate,” Environment Canada said.

In Queens County, a plow dispatcher said conditions haven't improved much in central parts of the province, and with blowing snow and poor visibility, it could be late afternoon before things get better.

In Kings County, roads continue to get icy, and dispatchers for the area are concerned as temperatures continue to drop, and are advising people to slow down and be extra careful on the roads.

Delays across the island

Many health services across PEI are delaying or canceling in-person appointments due to the weather. Islanders are encouraged to visit Health PEI website For latest updates.

The Confederation Bridge is expected to be closed from 11am today until 11am tomorrow.

Classes in Study Abroad Canada are delayed until 10:30 a.m., with another announcement until 9:30 p.m.

All provincial civil service offices in the West Prince, East Prince, Queens and Charlottetown areas are on continuous delay until 12:30 p.m., with another announcement until 11:30 p.m.

Service Canada centers in Charlottetown, Summerside and O'Leary will have a delayed opening until 12:30 p.m., with a further update at 11:30 a.m.

The Island Waste Management Corporation canceled all waste collection routes on the island on Monday.
