A crocodile kills a woman in Indonesia despite her colleague's efforts to pull her from the animal's jaws


A crocodile attacked and killed a woman while working on a palm oil plantation in central Indonesia, local police said, and her body was later recovered from the animal's clutches.

Indonesia is home to several species of crocodiles that attack and kill regularly people.

The 44-year-old woman was working with a colleague in the West Kalimantan region on the island of Borneo when the crocodile chased the pair, biting the victim's left hand and dragging her in your groove

The woman's colleague tried to pull her out of the animal's jaws but lost the fight, before she ran to call the police in the Ketapang coastal area, police said.

“After a 90-minute search, the body of the victim was found,” local police chief Bagus Tri Baskoro said in a statement late Thursday.

He said the remains of a woman were found still in the crocodile's clutches “not far” from the scene of the attack. The animal released its body when rescuers came to it, he said.

Borneo is split between Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia and is home to vast areas of jungle hosting a kaleidoscope of rare animals.

Palm oil plantations and logging projects have been criticized in the past for encroaching on Borneo's rainforest areas.

In August, a crocodile killed a 54-year-old woman while she was swimming in a river on the Maluku islands in Indonesia. That same month, a 63-year-old tin miner was killed by a crocodile near a river on the island of Bangka in Sumatra.

In 2019, a scientist was dragged by a large captive crocodile into his den and killed on the island of Sulawesi.

In 2018, a mob in Indonesia's easternmost region of Papua butchered nearly 300 crocodiles in retaliation after a local man was killed by one of the reptiles.

Indonesia has also seen several deadly python attacks this year. In August, a a woman was found dead with her daughter after a python attack in central Indonesia.

In July, there was a woman found dead inside the belly of a snake after being swallowed whole in the village of Siteba, in the province of South Sulawesi.

The previous month, a a woman was found dead inside the belly of a reticulated python in another area of ​​South Sulawesi.
