COUNTY BAY, Fla. (WMBB) – The Mexico Beach revitalization project is a full-scale project that will cover 3 miles of beach at a cost of $27 million.
When Hurricane Michael hit the area head on in 2018 most of the sand was washed away along with many buildings. 6-years later officials say they are ready to revitalize the beach for the first time ever.
Mexico Beach council members move forward with multi-phase developer project
“This project has been in the works since before Hurricane Michael. So basically me and my team and my amazing peers, Bay County TDC, Bay County Board of County Commissioners have been helping work on this project for almost eight years at least. So, we are very happy to see it come to fruition. We're excited to start putting shovels in place and really enhancing what's already a wonderful beach, because that's basically what this project is going to do,” said the president of the Development Council Kimberly Shoaf Mexico Beach Community.
Weeks Marine Construction Company arrives on site. They will deploy their equipment to extract a million cubic yards of sand from a borrowed sand site that has the same sand quality as Mexico Beach.
Then they use a scraper to dig up that sand, take it to the beach and spread it.
Mexico Beach to bring electric charging ports to the city
“And the project includes both beach berms and dock extensions. So only different areas of Mexican Beach will just have the dune developed, where the rest of Mexican Beach will have the dune and the beach developed,” said Shoaf.
It will begin the week of January 6th, and is expected to be completed by April 15th. Raising the dunes will help provide better protection for residents from storms.
“We are going to expand the beach and replenish or rebuild or rebuild the dunes to provide more protection from future storms as well as immediate beauty,” said the Mexican Administrator Beach City, Chris Truitt.
The project is fully funded by federal and state dollars.
