Move over Resident Evil, Onimusha is Capcom's latest remake darling (just don't expect to get your hands on it until 2026)

Move over Resident EvilCapcom has a new premium remake-driven pony in town, and it's called Onimusha.

Yes, you read that right. Onimusha is back, and looking better than ever in Capcom's absolutely insane REengine. The publisher has rebooted the series – which has been dormant since 2018, at least, in terms of console and PC games – with a dark fantasy, triple-A action game. It certainly looks like his goal to be at the Elden Circle, Dark Soulsand Niohs of the world, isn't it?

At the 2024 Game Awards, Capcom surprised audiences by presenting a new Onimusha game without teasing or fanfare. In the trailer, we saw intense third-person action, and heard some very strange English voice acting. The game is called Onimusha: Path of the Swordcoming in 2026.

We haven't heard from the Onimusha series in a long time. It was the last we saw of the famous Capcom franchise Onimusha: Warlords, a well-valued iteration of a decent game who was riding behind some of the momentum gathered by the nostalgia hawk Resident evil 2 new. A remake of the first game in the series, you can go play it on current consoles and PC right now, if you want a taste of what to expect from this new title.

At the time of writing, the Onimusha series has sold a total of 8.7 million copies worldwide, making it Capcom's tenth best-selling franchise (behind Monster Hunter, A dead revolutionDragon Dogma, Street Fighter, Mega ManResi, DMC, and Ace Attorney). I wonder how much this new game is going to push this often forgotten series up the charts.

We'll find out in 2026.
