Virat Kohli was at the center of yet another Decision Review System (DRS) controversy on the second day of the pink-ball Test in Adelaide. In the 58th over of Australia's innings, Marsh faced Ravichandran Ashwin. Going down the pitch, Marsh was hit on the pad with his bat close to the ball. The on-field umpire Richard Illingworth was not out of it, encouraging the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma call for DRS.
Replays showed a spike on the snicko as the ball passed close to both bat and pad. The third umpire, Richard Kettleborough, was not sure whether the ball hit the pad or the bat first. He decided not to reverse the decision on the pitch, allowing Marsh to stay at the track.
“I wasn't sure if it was bat or pad at first,” Kettleborough was heard saying during the broadcast. Hawkeye technology, which determines the trajectory of the ball, was not even consulted.

The decision sparked frustration in the Indian camp. Virat Kohli even walked up to umpire Illingworth to express his displeasure. He reminded the umpire of an almost identical case involving KL Rahul during the first test.
“KL's were the same in Perth – two spikes, a bat and a pad,” Kohli told Illingworth.

During the Perth Test, Rahul was given out despite uncertain angles, with the third umpire returning the decision on the field. Kohli's frustration was showing Indiaconcerns about the inconsistency in the application of DRS protocols.
At the time of the incident, Marsh was yet to score. Before lunch, he managed to score two runs off 10 balls, with Australia at 191/4, holding an 11-run lead. An early rebound, however, could be crucial in a tightly contested game. Marsh was eventually dismissed by Ravichandran Ashwin for 9.
