While New Year's Day is often home to two rumbles and bangs, central Newfoundland felt a ruckus Wednesday that wasn't caused by fireworks.
Earthquakes Canada said a small earthquake occurred at 2:11 pm NT, off the coast of the island in Notre Dame Bay, between Fortune Harbor and Moreton Harbour.
Although people in central Newfoundland reported feeling the earthquake, there appeared to be no major impacts.
“The quake was a magnitude 2.8, perceptibly large but too small to cause any damage,” said an Earthquakes Canada spokesperson.
According to the Earthquake Monitoring Group, the epicenter was about 19 kilometers west of Twillingate, 33 kilometers northeast of Lewisporte or 85 kilometers northeast of Gander.
