Mexico is lying five tectonic plates which makes it one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to earthquakes, especially on the Pacific coast.
In 1985 an 8.1 magnitude earthquake centered on the Pacific coast struck much of central and southern Mexico, killing thousands and causing extensive damage in Mexico City.
A 7.1 magnitude earthquake on 19 September 2017 killed 369 people, most of them in the capital.
On the same day in 2022central Mexico was hit by another earthquake, just hours after millions of people took part in a mock earthquake safety exercise. The effects of the 7.6 magnitude earthquake extended as far as 1,500 miles to the north, where four foot high waves began to churn inside the Death Valley cave known as Devils Hole.
