About 100 residents of an apartment block in Prince Rupert, B.C., were forced out of their homes by an early morning fire on Christmas Day, the city said.
A fire broke out around 3 a.m. at the Sherbrooke Apartments on Sherbrooke Avenue in the northern B.C. city, displacing 99 residents of 36 units, the city said in a statement.
Residents have been moved to nearby hotels and are receiving emergency assistance services, the city added.
“Our thoughts are with all the families affected by the fire,” the statement said.
The city said the Salvation Army will provide refreshments to fire rescuers. The city is asking residents to donate food and essential items to charity.
According to the Metropolitan Municipality, the cause of the fire is being investigated and the details of the damage are yet to come.
Prince Rupert is a port city of about 12,000 people, located about 500 kilometers west of Prince George.
