The killing in the heart of Moscow of its general in charge of chemical weapons comes on the eve of the Russian president's traditional marathon year-end press conference. Mr Putin is yet to comment on his country's withdrawal from Syria after the fall of Assad but is sure to pick on the death of general Igor Kirillov, what with arresting an Uzbek suspect who has admitted working for Ukraine.
