Celebrating the first night of Hanukkah in Wilkes-Barre

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – Wednesday marked the first night of Hanukkah, the Jewish holiday celebrating the historic victory of light over darkness.

At the 48th annual Christmas Together Wednesday event in Luzerne County, members of nearby Temple Israel Wilkes-Barre gathered to play music for guests to enjoy.

They played a variety of traditional Jewish songs.

Jewish leaders say they attend Christmas Together every year.

“It's a lot of fun and it brings light and happiness and joy and all those kinds of good things,” said Temple Israel Rabbi Larry Kaplan.

This is only the fifth time in the last 114 years that Christmas and the first day of Hanukkah have overlapped.
