Character.AI publishes a short event to reveal user data

Character.AI recently faced a data privacy incident where some user information was inadvertently exposed to other users for a short period of ten minutes. The company emphasized its commitment to user trust, safety and privacy, according to the Character.AI Blog.

Event details

The incident occurred when the Character list on the Character.AI homepage was updated, which mistakenly made some user account information public. This disclosure may include username, name, bio, Characters, homepage, personalities, voices, or chat. However, the investigation revealed that only one section of a user's account was visible to others.

In cases involving chat content, most affected users only had the first page of a single character chat open. The issue was quickly addressed by the Character.AI team, which lasted about ten minutes, and affected less than 0.01% of users.

Preventive Measures Implemented

In response to the incident, Character.AI has reviewed its procedures for making changes to its critical infrastructure. The company has introduced additional technical controls to ensure that each change meets its quality standards and to prevent similar issues in the future.

Character.AI acknowledged the breach of user trust and expressed regret over the incident, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring the privacy and safety of user information. The company is taking comprehensive measures to prevent a repeat.
