Gary Neville: Man Utd need cultural overhaul of 'mediocre' squad – but Sir Alex Ferguson's squad reminds me of Sir Alex Ferguson's | Football News

Gary Neville has called for a “cultural overhaul” at Manchester United as he also branded the team “mediocre” after their 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim's side failed to build on last weekend's impressive 2-1 win against Manchester City and will continue to occupy the bottom half of the Premier League standings as we approach Christmas.

Meanwhile, Liverpool sit comfortably at the top of the table after their impressive 6-3 win against fellow club Tottenham Hotspur. Sky Sports notes Jamie Carragher hailed 'performance of champions' from Arne Slot's team.

Speaking on his latest podcast, Neville assessed the different situations at each club…

“United's team is mediocre and it needs to change

I think it is very good that Ruben Amorim sees what he has. In the past, there have been times where you can be fooled into thinking you have a better group of players, because of good results and moving up the league.

But they are miles away in every way.

Playing the way Amorim wants to play, with the 3-4-3, he has to change. He has tried everyone by rotating the team and I don't think there will be many that he has looked at and thought, 'yes, I want you on the bus'.

They are all very mediocre, and I don't know how it happened – they are better than what they show, let's be clear. But it is a pattern.

Well done Bournemouth, that's two years ahead and Andoni Iraola is doing a fantastic job. That Amorim can look at these players in the cold light of day is a testament to that.

Manchester United head coach Amorim reacts after a tough game against Bournemouth where his side walked away goalless in defeat

He has a six month beauty parade if you will – which is more than an ugly parade. He sees what Manchester United fans have been looking for for 10 years, there needs to be a cultural overhaul.

It's a really difficult time, not many like the levels of performance or the way they are playing. They are all lads doing their best, it is not a personal attack, but they are not good enough to play for Manchester United, because this club aims to be at the top.

The same with Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea – these clubs aim to be at the top, but you have to get there.

It is very clear to watch these players, they are not good enough.

Neville compared Liverpool to the Manchester United team he played for after Arne Slott's side dominated, scoring six at Tottenham

Parts of this Liverpool team may remind me of the Manchester United team I played in.

I see David Beckham out here on the right, where Trent Alexander-Arnold is whipping in unbelievable crosses, I see running in behind and giving him a lot of body forward, but mostly I see different styles of football within a game.

Despite conceding six goals away from home, Liverpool manager Slott expressed frustration after his side conceded two goals to Tottenham when they “stopped running” for 15 minutes

We have been conditioned over the last eight years to this ideology, where you have a fixed philosophy of play, but I don't see that with Liverpool.

I can see them playing with three or four different styles within the same game. I see them playing long forward passes, sometimes on the counter attack, sometimes deep and tight, they start with a high press and then change.

Whatever the game needs and wants they have the ability to do.

If a team is pushing back they can go in, dig in together, stay close and defend as a unit. If the game is there to go they go over and push up with a high line, but they don't play one style continuously throughout the game.

There are times where you see Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis McAllister in midfield controlling the game, slowing it down, keeping possession.

It is our duty to think that a team must play one way, and you cannot change into a team that plays different ways in different games.

I thought that part of that had gone, where players had become somewhat robotic: 'I will do what my coach tells me.'

This Liverpool team has independent thinking, to know what a game needs. That's what I remember, and Liverpool are much better than I ever thought they would be this season.
