Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has warned that the ceasefire with the Lebanese Hezbollah militia is in jeopardy, according to a report by the Times of Israel.
Israel must “get involved” if Hezbollah fighters do not withdraw from southern Lebanon as mandated by the cease-fire agreement, Katz told the newspaper on Sunday.
Katz reportedly emphasized Israel's interest in maintaining the ceasefire.
However, he said, this was dependent on Hezbollah terrorists withdrawing behind the Litani River, about 30 kilometers north of the Israel-Lebanon border, and the Lebanese Army removing all weapons and terrorist infrastructure. in the border area.
This hasn't happened yet, Katz warned.
The ceasefire has been in place since the end of November and is expected to initially last for around two months, until the end of January.
During this time, in addition to the withdrawal of Hezbollah, the Israeli Army is expected to leave Lebanon and the Lebanese Army is going to strengthen its presence in the border area.
