Justice Juan M. Merchan sentenced Donald J. Trump to the unconditional releasea rare and lenient outcome in the New York state courts, cementing his status as a felon before his inception.
Unlike a conditional distributionwhich imposes requirements such as employment or renewal, Mr. Trump has no responsibility. The decision, which was expected based on an earlier ruling, stemmed from his conviction on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to the sex scandal cover-up. While prior cases of similar charges in Manhattan often resulted in jail time, probation, or other penalties, no other defendant investigated was acquitted.
