RCMP in Kamloops say a 68-year-old skier has been found dead.
Tomasz Jaholkowski, 68, was reported missing from Sun Peaks Ski Resort on Dec. 10 after failing to return to the slopes one day.
He was last on the West Bowl Express chairlift, a new lift that takes skiers to a large area bordering the resort.
According to a post from Sun Peaks Resort, he was found outside the ski-area boundary on Dec. 12.
In a statement shared Friday, RCMP say no criminality is suspected and the BC Coroners Service has been notified of the death.
In an earlier interview, Sun Peaks spokeswoman Kristina Antoniak confirmed Jaholkowski was the third person to go missing after using the newly opened ski lift this season, although the other two were soon found alive.
She said the resort is reviewing signs and markings aimed at indicating to visitors where the ski area ends. The edges of the border are already double-roped, she said, with signs indicating not to cross the border.
On its website, Sun Peaks recommends that visitors stay within bounds for their safety. Individuals who decide to go off-limits are urged not to do so alone, to take avalanche training, and to carry equipment including transceivers, shovels, probes, extra clothing, food and water, communication devices, and emergency supplies.
“Mountain recreation is a source of joy,” the resort said in its release. “Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to Mr. Jaholkowski's family and loved ones at this difficult time.”
