Nathan Ellis, Chennai Super Kings recruit for IPL 2025 took one of the biggest catches in BBL 14. The amazing catch came during the BBL clash between the Hobart Hurricanes and the Adelaide Strikers.
An acceptance that was against religion
In the 10th over, the Strikers were chasing their target, and Matthew Short was attacking the Hurricanes strongly. Set at noon, Ellis had a different strategy. Waqar Salamkheil delivered a high, slow ball. Short moved forward to hit it powerfully but mistimed his swing. The ball rose high, and at first Ellis misjudged his route, forcing him to run back.
Despite that, he stayed focused on the ball. When he came down, Ellis jumped up and caught him with both hands as he fell to the ground. The crowd was stunned by the incredible catch, which gave the Hurricanes a significant advantage and shifted the momentum of the game in their favour.
Commanding Total Hobart sets the stage
Earlier in the game, Hobart posted a total of 214/5, with Ben McDermott leading the charge. McDermott's brilliant 68 off 34 balls included three sixes, and he broke his bat after hitting the second-highest over. After taping, McDermott continued to unleash powerful shots, helping Hobart post its only 200-plus total of the season and the fourth-highest score in team history. Despite losing early wickets – Mitchell Owen (8) and Caleb Jewell (22) – the Hurricanes were propelled by McDermott and Tim David (33), who added 88 runs in the last six overs.
The Strikers, led by Overton's 2-27, fought back with some key advances, but Hobart's impressive fielding and explosive batting made it difficult for Adelaide to catch them.
Strikers Big Push comes up short
In reply, the Strikers got on well, with Captain Matt Short (52) and D'Arcy Short (41) putting on a 76-run partnership. Ollie Pope added 39, and Overton added a quickfire 30 not out. However, the Strikers could not keep up with the rising run rate.
When Matt Short reached his 14th BBL half-century with a massive six, it looked like the Strikers could end an exciting run. But then came Ellis' stunning catch which sent Short back to the dressing room and put the match in Hobart's favour.
A series of amazing fielding efforts
The Strikers' chase continued to unfold as Tim David made a stunning flying catch to dismiss Alex Ross (8), and Ollie Pope calmly fell to a back ramp that was fired off Chris Jordan. The Hurricanes' pitching and bowling always seemed to be a step ahead.
The final blow came when Overton tried to minimize the damage with a series of finishes, but it wasn't enough. The Strikers finished at 203/6, falling short by 11 runs.
