North Sea storm halts German ferry services

A storm surge in the North Sea disrupted ferry services to the North Frisian Islands early Monday.

In Dagebüll, near the Danish border, the ferry pier was flooded after the water rose well 2 meters above the normal high tide level, according to data from the Federal Agency for Sea and Water (BSH).

In the North Sea, a storm occurs when the tide rises at least 1.5 meters above the normal high tide level. However, significant damage is usually only expected at much higher water levels.

The ferry company Wyker Dampfschiffs-Reederei suspended services to the North Frisian Islands, including Amrum and Föhr.

Neue Pellwormer Dampfschiffahrts canceled the first two morning services between Nordstrand and Pellworm with plans to resume services in the morning.

According to BSH, the water level in the northern city of Hamburg was expected to be slightly above the storm surge mark early Monday.
