Sonic the hedgehog 3 based heavily on the events of the 2001 Dreamcast game Sonic adventure 2. The live-action film doesn't recreate the platformer's story for a beat, but it does introduce a rival Shadow who is driven by Sonic's revenge, investigates the family of lawyer Doctor Robotnik, and the moon blowing up at one point too. Despite retaining many of the same story elements, Sonic 3 leaving out a few key characters as the treasure-hunting thief, Rouge the Bat, and the Biolizard, Sonic adventure 2is the final boss. However, keen-eyed fans have noticed that you seem to have a blink-and-you-miss reference to the film about the giant reptile, and they are feeling conflicted about it.
In the games, the Biolizard is the prototype of the Ultimate Lifeform. This is the creation of Dr. Gerald Robotnik, who went on to create Shadow as the “true” result of his research into creating an immortal being. Since Gerald does not create Shadow in the movies, since he is an alien from another planet like all anthropomorphic animals, there was no need to introduce the Biolizard. Sonic the hedgehog 3. However, it turns out that the film makes a brief reference to the creature during Shadow's flashback. 50 years before the events of the film, Shadow lived in a government facility with Maria Robotnik, Gerald's granddaughter. The two became close like sisters, and they can be seen playing together while scientists are trying to do experiments on the fast hedgehog. One of these moments sees the couple watching a kaiju movie that, quickly, seems to be an homage to him early on. Godzilla movies. But upon further investigation, it is also a good reference to the Biolizard. The large reptile seen terrorizing civilians in the film is very similar to the character, from its narrow mechanical eyes to the cables that extend from its jaws down its body. The film that both watches is in black-and-white, but I think if it was in color more people would have caught this reference immediately seeing his orange-brown skin.
On the one hand, it's nice to see the movie pay homage to an important figure in the Shadow game story, but with the way it's live-action Sonic universe has treated one of the games' biggest monster-like enemies as a comedic relief prop, some fans aren't thrilled with it as Sonic 3 referring to the Biolizard, fearing that it is becoming a pattern for these films. Iblis, a fiery monster from Sonic '06, mentioned in the Hills Paramount + presentation like stage puppets in a rock opera program. So now, getting a second of the games' giant kaiju-esque monsters turned into something else has some fans a little wary, as they wonder if Sonic and friends will -never faced something of that magnitude in the live action movies.
That being said, some fans are fine with the omission of the Biolizard, saying that there could be the complex storywhich then may not have translated to the screen so gracefully as did the most comprehensive story. With the events at Sonic 3and post-credit scenethere is a strong possibility that Metal Overlord, a dragon-like form of Metal Sonic from Sonic Heroes, he may appear in the fourth filmso maybe we'll see Sonic, Shadow, and the rest of the team face something on that scale when a Sonic 4 first appearance in 2027.
