The police believe that the person of interest is related to the policy killing from the CEO of UnitedHealthcare Brian Thomson he left New York City shortly after the killing, by bus from Upper Manhattan.
And New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch said CNN in an interview that police released Thursday photos showing the person's face without a mask because investigators want “a wider audience to see the photo outside of New York City.” “
Tisch said police have “a lot of evidence,” which includes “a lot of forensic evidence, fingerprints, DNA evidence,” as well as a “massive camera canvas” of the gunman's movements throughout his town.
New York has an extensive network of government and private surveillance cameras. Police and prosecutors have special teams that sift through surveillance video to track down suspects, and match facial and body features, and clothing details.
NYPD top brass told CNN that surveillance footage showed the person of interest riding a bicycle from Wednesday's scene fatal shooting of Thompson in midtown Manhattan to Central Park, and then leaving the park near West 77th Street on the bike.
Other photos show the man walking along West 86th Street and Columbus Avenue before getting into a taxi cab that he drove about five miles north to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Washington Heights, just off side of the George Washington Bridge, police said.
The man then entered the bus terminal, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny.
“These buses are interstate buses,” Kenny told CNN. “That's why we believe he may be gone
New York City.”
Kenny said that the police are trying to find out which bus the man may have boarded.
“We have video of him entering the Port Authority Buses. We don't have video of him leaving and we believe he may have gotten on a bus,” said Kenny.
In addition to westbound buses, the complex also has shuttle vans that transport passengers across the GWB on the other side of the Hudson River to Fort Lee, New Jersey and points further west.
Law enforcement sources said Thursday that the suspect in the Thompson shooting traveled from Atlanta on a Greyhound bus that arrived in Manhattan on Nov. 24.
That was two days before UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare, announced that it would hold an investor day on December 4 at the Hilton Hotel downtown.
Thomson, 50, was shot as he was about to walk into the Hilton by a gunman with a mask or neck glue over his face.
