A devastating 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Vanuatu's main island, Efate, severely damaging Port Vila and crushing the basement of a building that housed the US and French embassies. Mass casualties and destruction were reported, including bodies visible in the streets, according to the US Geological Survey and witness accounts.
