Quebec Liberal caucus wants Trudeau to resign: sources

Quebec lawmakers are increasing pressure on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to step down as leader.

Quebec caucus chair Stéphane Lauzon consulted with MPs personally over the holidays and briefed national caucus leadership on the caucus situation, sources told CBC News.

A Quebec Liberal lawmaker told CBC News they agree Trudeau should resign.

The lawmaker spoke to CBC News on condition of anonymity because of caucus confidentiality.

In an interview with CBC News on Tuesday, Quebec Liberal MP Alexandra Mendes says it's abundantly clear that 'our constituents will not renew their trust in us' if Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stays.

Another lawmaker, Alexandra Mendes, told CBC News that she believed the caucus's consensus was that “the prime minister should step down.”

“That's the agreement that was sent to the caucus chair and he was to convey the message to the national caucus.”

Mendes says she was not one of the lawmakers consulted by Lauzon. She says this is probably because she openly called for the prime minister to resign weeks ago.

The Quebec Liberal caucus is scheduled to caucus on January 9th.

Mendes too Talked to Radio Canada Also in an interview in French and the call for Trudeau to leave was not “necessarily unanimous.”

Radio-Canada reached out to all Quebec caucus MPs, but could not confirm Mendez's statement.

Only four lawmakers — Mendes, Sophie Chatel, Anthony Housefather and Joel Lightbound — confirmed they were calling on Trudeau to resign.

All four expressed this view at the beginning of the crisis caused by the resignation of Chrystia Freeland in early December.

CBC News has reached out to Lauzon, who is currently on vacation, for comment.

But Ma a Politico's statement On Tuesday, Lauzon said, “No letter has been sent to the prime minister from the Quebec caucus. Unfortunately, what happens in the Quebec caucus stays in the caucus.”

The Prime Minister is on holiday in BC with his family and is understood to be taking time to think about his future.

The Atlantic and Ontario regional Liberal caucuses have already signaled consensus among their respective MPs that Trudeau should resign, and called on the prime minister to step down as party leader last week.
