Back in April, Sonic the Hedgehog followers declare war against the new The Lion King prequel Mufasa when it was revealed that the blur's were blue the third live action film and Disney's latest photorealistic CGI venture would both release in theaters on the same day. Well, the time has come, with both films premiering this past weekend on December 20th, and not only Sonic 3 hitting Mufasa among critics, but Shadow the Hedgehog's first major album run straight past the The Lion King espionage at the domestic box office as well, pulling in $62 million compared to Mufasais $35 million. As you would expect, Sonic fans are having a field day, especially after some pundits doubted a Sonic adventure 2 the adaptation could go toe-to-toe with a prequel to the long-loved Disney classic and come out ahead.
Sonic 3it could be said that victory comes with a star, however, as Mufasa had at the topped the worldwide box office. But, Sonic 3 has not yet been released internationally, and is rolling out in several areas over the next few weeksincluding the franchise's home country of Japan. So while Mufasa technologically winning around the world thanks to his start, it is still possible Sonic 3 over it Mufasa as it comes to other countries based on how well it did in America. Since both movies were first released, Disney has celebrated Mufasaimpact at the global box office, send out a social media post calling it “the #1 movie in the world.” Lead that frame Sonic fans went to the post on X (formerly Twitter), accusing Disney of misrepresentation Mufasabox office performance, and Disney social media managers to hide posts referencing Sonic 3 or the series.
Although the international battle between the two films remains to be seen, that hasn't stopped fans from claiming victory over the winners with critics and at the domestic box office. And yes, I feel bad for the lion, but the posts are terrible.
Sonic the hedgehog 3 paving the way for a fourth filmwhich will be shown for the first time in the spring of 2027. The film post-credit scene introduces new characters, but how they fit into the live-action universe remains a mystery.
