Sorry, Austin Butler lovers, but American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis says the Dune actor's casting in the new movie is “fake news”

Despite previous reports, it seems that Austin Butler is taking the role of Patrick Bateman in Luca Guadagnino. American Psycho it's just “fake news.”

Last month, it was reported that Austin Butler, the Fabulous Adventure actor of Dune and Sharpay portrays Patrick Bateman at American Psycho in a new adaptation from Challengers director Luca Guadagnino. The character is obviously very iconic these days thanks to Christian Bale's performance in the 2000 original, but Butler's hypothetical casting would certainly have allowed for a completely different look. Without it, talking about it a recent episode of his own podcastBret Easton Ellis, the original author of the book American Psycho on which it is based, said he believes Butler's casting didn't happen (thanks, Bloodlust).

“I feel like it's fake news,” Easton Ellis shared. “I heard somewhere, from someone, that there are no contracts. Austin Butler has not signed anything to play Patrick Bateman. Luca doesn't have a contract. Scott Burns, who is supposed to write the screenplay, is not under contract. business at all.” The author continued, “From my various sources, this is just fake news put out there to see how audiences are going to react .If it's there, I'm not involved. I might get some money if they do this, but I'm not involved creatively, and it is that's all I know.”

Business reporter Jeff Sneider confirmed Easton Ellis' claims, saying that the American Psycho ad was more about making Lionsgate look a little more attractive on paper as an acquisition target than it was about an actual movie that's going to happen. Report last month says Lionsgate is currently for saleso maybe Butler's report was just to interest a buyer. Either way, if this movie ends up being the case, it has a lot of work to do to be as good as the original.
