A Taiwanese security source has told Reuters that there are nearly 90 navy and coast guard ships in waters near Taiwan and the surrounding area of China. As for warships, the number is reported to have almost doubled from 8 to 14 over the weekend.
For some context, China has again stepped up operations around Taiwan over the past month as part of its drills and war games. The thing about all this is not so much as it is seen that China continues to grow. It's more about what they're trying to normalize. This could be seen as China just doing things in China but there could be a long term strategy to it.
For now, China is expected to use this as an excuse as they conduct drills in the next week or so. But this will certainly be a more interesting place when Trump takes over next year.
