The latest Disney+ animated series is called Marvel Your Friendly Spider-Man Community and it's another origin story for the web crawler, but one that brings with it major changes as he explores another history that swaps Tony Stark's teachings for Norman Osborne's mentor. The first trailer is full of nostalgia for the 60s comic books that launched the superhero, but with some stutter-y cel-shaded photography that doesn't rub everyone the right way.
Streaming on Disney+ starting January 29th, Your Friendly Spider-Man Community follows Peter Parker experimenting with his powers, costume, and growing popularity on social media while juggling friendships and homework. The first trailer also teases the show's alternate timeline in which Osborne, who is usually the Green Goblin, is a technological visionary standing alongside Spider-Man instead of Stark's Iron Man . He ends up looking at the white and black Fantastic Four costume of the web series as well.
Parker is voiced by Hudson Thomas, Colman Domingo's Osborne, and Kari Wahlgreen's Aunt May, with Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock, Hugh Dancy's Doctor Octopus, and other cast members appearing. Spider-Man supporting a set. Originally set as an origin story for Tom Holland's version of the character in the MCU, Your Friendly Spider-Man Community it is now its own thing, free from the shackles of the deep and complex mythology of live productions.
The trailer combines modern sensibilities with retro-looking styles, although its lithograph-inspired animation won't impress everyone. Some fans think it looks too choppy and flat. Others wonder if it is a budget issue or if this is the intended effect. It certainly doesn't look flat, but the beauty of the comic book comes with its own virtues.
There are already enough of them Spider-Man cartoons in more traditional styles, so I'm excited to see something that takes a new visual approach to the well-worn source material. Then again, I also go to the mat that protects the Wild 3D MTV series from 2003.
