Ontario police are investigating after Toronto police Officers fired a shotgun round and blunt impact projectiles A person was seriously injured during the arrest on Saturday morning.
Officers were called to an apartment near Jane Street and St. Clair Avenue W around 7:40 a.m., according to a release from the province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU).
A 56-year-old man stabbed someone with a knife and threatened others with a staple gun, the release said. When the police reached the spot, the man approached them with a staple gun.
One of the officers fired a soak round, hitting the man. Sock rounds are essentially bean bags and are considered a less-lethal option for police.
Police also used “multiple conducted energy weapons,” the SIU said.
The man then barricaded himself in his apartment unit. An officer fired a gun, but did not hit the man.
After attempts at negotiation, officers entered the unit. OAn officer fired blunt impact projectiles, another type of less-lethal weapon, the SIU said. Police have also used more powered energy weapons.
The seriously injured person was arrested and taken to the hospital, SIU said. No officers were injured.

The SIU is an independent agency that investigates the conduct of police officers in cases of death, serious injury, discharge of a firearm or allegations of sexual misconduct.
