The victim of a double homicide in Calgary has been identified by the school division as an elementary teacher


A school division in southern Alberta says one of its teachers, who was the victim of a double homicide over the weekend, will be deeply missed by colleagues, friends and students.

In a statement Tuesday, Rocky View Schools said Anya Kaminski was working as a teacher at an elementary school in Cochrane, northwest of Calgary, before she was killed Sunday.

He previously worked at a primary school in Airdrie and a high school in Springbank.

“We extend our deepest condolences to everyone affected by the death of Anya Kaminski,” the statement said.

“She will be deeply missed by her many colleagues, friends and students at Rocky View School. We are grateful for the positive impact Ania has had on the lives of our students and staff over the years.”

Police say the search is on for Kaminski's spouse after a 30-year-old woman and a 70-year-old man, the woman's father, were found dead in two separate locations in Calgary.

On Tuesday, police confirmed to CBC News that the male victim was identified as Stanislav Wardjala and the female as his daughter Ania.

Late Monday, police found the body of the suspect, 38-year-old Benedict Kaminski, near his vehicle parked in a rural area about 80 kilometers northwest of Calgary.

He was not previously known to the police and had no prior criminal convictions, Insp. Li Wen told reporters on Monday.

The motive for the killing is under investigation

Wayne said investigators were working to determine a motive for the killings but believed they were targeted.

The school division said it offers its deepest condolences to all those affected and is working to support students and staff.

“Families are being made aware of the supports available for any students in need at our schools,” the division said. “We encourage parents/guardians to discuss the needs of their students with their school administrators.”

A GoFundMe page Was started by a family friend. As of Tuesday afternoon, it had raised more than $120,000 to call her three children a beloved mother, daughter, sister and friend.

Police said the children are safe. Postmortem of both bodies will be done on Friday.
