'These aren't horror movies' – Sony Pictures CEO just can't figure out why no one wanted to watch Spider-Man movies that don't have Spider-Man in them

We all know that at Sony live-action Spider-Verse is a hot mess, but the CEO of Sony Pictures doesn't get why they didn't do well.

If I offered you two cards, one that said “a movie about Spider-Man” and another that said “a movie about Spider-Man's villains, but it doesn't exist”, which would you choose you? Of course the former, since most comic book villains are just not very interesting on their own. Venom he's obviously one exception to that rule, but he also looks like Spider-Man, and he's been an anti-hero in recent years, so there's a strong appeal there. But Morbius? Madame Web? The requirements? Nah. But Sony made movies about them anyway, and now, talking to the LA TimesSony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra said he just doesn't get why these movies didn't do well.

The latest release, Kraven, has been a huge bomb, with a current worldwide box office gross of nearly $46, not even half of its estimated $110 million price tag. Vinciquerra said it was “probably the worst launch we've had in the seven and a half years” since it started, going on to say, surprisingly, “it didn't work out very well, which I still do. You understand, because a movie isn't a bad movie.” There's a big misconception here that any kind of quality could make up for a movie that nobody wants, but in Vinciquerra's opinion, it's it's the media's fault for films like Madame Web, and then Kraven, not performing any better.

“Madame Web didn't pre-perform in the theaters because the media just crucified it. It wasn't a bad movie, and it did well on Netflix. For some reason, the media decided they didn't want us to make these movies out of Kraven and Madame Web, and the critics just destroyed their cause.”

It was because the movies were bad, Tony! Venom was a hit because it's a famous Spider-Man character, Tony! And also each of his series did worse than the previous one at the box office, because the other films of Sony Spider-Man-less Spider-Man have been received so badly! Come on!

Anyway, none of this matters, because that universe is dead nowfocusing once again on everyone's favorite character: Spider-Man. Who would have thought it would be a smart decision!
