US equities have bounced back from the lows but are still deep in negative territory. The S&P 500 is down 57 points to 5913 after falling as low as 5869. If the index falls 1% it would be the first time since 1952 that it has experienced two declines of 1% (or more) in the period between Christmas and New Year. Traditionally, that is one of the strongest times of the year.
At the same time, European stocks fell to moderate losses:
- Stoxx 600 -0.5%
- German DAX -0.4%
- France CAC -0.6%
- UK FTSE 100 -0.3%
- Spain IBEX +0.1%
- Flat FTSE MIB in Italy
