Walmart announced Monday that it was unveil a new logoas part of a “comprehensive brand refresh.”
The US-based retailer said in a press release that the new look – its first change since 2008 – reflects how it has evolved. In his internet “brand center” Walmart praised its color palette (true blue and sparkling yellow), typeface (“sans everyday”) and trademark symbol “spark”, calling the latter a “beacon that guides customers”.
But some people online have noticed something else about the new logo.
“It looks the same,” he wrote someone on Xone of many people who have similar feelings.
“I can't believe someone got paid for this,” posted another person
“A complete overhaul is long overdue, and while some may be uncomfortable with this radical change, the time has come,” he mocked another.
Walmart is a the world's largest sellerhiring some 1.6 million people in and around the US 100,000 people in Canada.
Its founder, Sam Walton, opened the first store in 1962 in Rogers, Ark., and launched the first logo at the same time: the word WALMART in vertical blue script, according to the Walmart Museum.
according to Business InsiderWalmart has rolled out seven different brands before the latest one. This includes moving the text from WALMART to WAL-MART to WAL*MART to, finally, Walmart, as we know it now: one word, lower case, no hyphens or a star.
In 2008, the company added the yellow “spark” that represents the “spirit of inspiration” that led Walton to create the first store, according to the Walmart Museum.
In its announcement, Walmart said the updated wordmark is “inspired by Sam Walton's classic trucker hat.”
The update “reflects our evolving capabilities and our long-term commitment to serving our customers today and tomorrow,” said William White, senior vice president and chief marketing officer for Walmart US in Monday press release.
'Meaningful differences'
Not all reactions to the not-so-new logo were negative. some website design and marketingfor example, called a welcome “shine” while noting that it would not make sense for Walmart to change its recognizable logo significantly.
“The logo itself is an example of simplicity done beautifully,” wrote the editor of a design website Creative blog.
“While parts of the internet are outraged by the 'minor' changes, as a big brand Walmart had no reason to completely change its logo – and the design team has done an outstanding job of enhancing the best parts of the existing design to achieve the brand's goals.”
The changes can be difficult for the “non-observant eye to see,” wrote the Fast company website, while explaining that the word Walmart has been redrawn, the spark is separated from the text and the blue is brighter.
“You might say it's subtle, but there are meaningful differences,” White is quoted as saying in the Fast Company article.
And how Free Forbes NotesWalmart “was not worth more than $ 735 billion by throwing money away. ” It seems that a professional team was behind the update, even if the changes seemed small.
“From continuity to keeping up with current trends, there will be very good reasons behind the seemingly minor change in Walmart's new logo.”
However, that didn't stop people online from having some fun.
“Is this a joke?” posted someone on X.
“A lot of people hate Walmart's logo redesign, but if you've ever been a third grade girl, you can tell that the new logo is completely different — the old one is a sun one, and the new one is a flower. ,” posted X user Kelley K.
