Warcraft 3: Reforged 2.0 is a great update of the timeless RTS classic, but I think I'll stick with the original enhanced graphics


Warcraft 3: Regeneration 2.0 it's almost a perfect update of one of the RTS genre's all-time greats, but I think the upgraded OG graphics are still better.

Reforged is known to have its original release in 2020 it was a break. Many features from the original game were missing; some advanced key commands have been removed; and on a surface level, the whole thing somehow seemed lifeless compared to the original, more restrained visual presentation. This all came down to a rework of the entire art direction which took away much of the cartoon charm from the unit and building design. More than four years later and with the 2.0 patch fixing almost every issue, I'm having a blast with Warcraft 3's latest version again, but I'm very grateful for being able to keep the OG graphics while keeping the other Refurbished improvements.

The November 13 fall shadow also includes the much simpler Warcraft 1 and 2 remasters, an unexpected follow-up to the poorly received Reforged and 2017's StarCraft Resize doing just fine with just a handful of QoL changes and enhanced original graphics, which is what W3: Reforged should have been from the start. It's no surprise that the 2.0 update focused on that aspect in the first place. “This is Warcraft 3 exactly as you remember it, only sharper.” Of course, more in-depth fixes and improvements came with it, but Blizzard was well aware of the negative response to the 2020 artwork rework.

I won't lie: Some parts of the Reformed show look good. In fact, I like to add most of the buildings and some depth to the natural environments. However, the whole thing seems to be too quick when it hits the fan and both the cities and the armies get bigger. Warcraft 3 is usually not played with the camera zoomed out, so adding too much detail to the units and heroes was going to result in too much visual sound for a game that is an RTS, not like Diablo. You need to be able to quickly understand who it is, what it is, and where everyone and everything is.

For some reason, Lemon Sky Studios and Blizzard Entertainment didn't think this whole thing through. After four years of complaints and people trying to download their official copies of Warcraft 3 (you were forced to download the 30 gigs of Reforged whether you wanted to or not), the rights relaunch 2.0 most of these crimes, but the ability to use them. old graphics are not completely new. They are, however, nicely enhanced now, and fully customizable. For example, you can have modern effects and environments while keeping the original (but sharper) models for everything else.

It's not only a great response to fan complaints about Reforged's slightly darker and far sexier look, but also a reminder that more remakes could go down the road of offering upgrades visual modular. While recent releases like Tomb Raider I-III remastered very good and even lets you switch to the old graphics on the fly, very often people like parts of a remaster and hate others. The ability to customize different pieces of Reforged is something I didn't expect as someone who had skipped out on the 2020 release entirely.

The Reforged mode, although inferior, has also received updates that range from subtle to rather large. For example, maps have got a good look. Additionally, the ability to customize hero skins (with heroes like Arthas and Thrall being taken from the campaigns and dropped into Skirmishes/Online) has far more options available, for for some reason, if you stick to the latest graphic look. However, I've found that the original 2002 face is just much easier on the eyes, especially when half the screen is up in flames and dozens of grunts are swinging their weapons. .

There's also a deeper explanation for why W3 veterans are influencing how the game looked for almost 20 years: we think of pre-Federation/Horde Azeroth as a cartoony, animated place that doesn't be capable of any kind of modern iteration with big ideas. to catch If Diablo diehards beat the drum of that franchise looked better the darker it was until Diablo 4 accept that, and then Warcraft heads like to say otherwise.

I am, however, interested in what the future of the Warcraft IP will bring beyond more WoW expansions (I strongly believe that the legendary MMORPG has overstayed its welcome and is running on fumes), and that includes maybe a darker a ' force the universe, but Warcraft 3 just pops off the screen and even flows gameplay-wise a lot better when it's like a bunch of low poly action figures and dioramas with odd proportions and lots of straight lines. Sometimes, it is better to let the past feel like the past.
