Wickedlythe magical film music phenomenon that has been taking the internet by storm for the past two months finally available on digital platforms. So now you can try belting out Cynthia Erivo's battle cry “Defying Gravity” from the comfort of your own home. The digital version of the film includes some special features such as a commentary from Erivo and co-director Ariana Grande, behind-the-scenes interviews, and a handful of deleted scenes. Wickedly already a long film, running at two hours and 40 minutes, but after seeing some of the cut moments fans are wondering if it really would have been that bad if the movie had been a few minutes longer.
Some of those deleted scenes were fine to cut. One involves Grande's character, Glinda the Good Witch, meeting her nobles Pfannee and ShenShen, and while it's nice to give these characters a little more screen time, they're somewhat relatively small players in the grand scheme of things. Among those who feel that they would have added a lot of meat to the film is Erivo as Elphaba who takes only a few minutes for her connections with Glinda and her sister's lover Boq.
Elphaba and Glinda's friendship is their life in the film and stage versions of Wickedlyand while a lot of time is spent on the enemies-to-friends arc, a few gaps could be filled. The deleted scene “Elpaba's Promise” is only two minutes long but it adds a lot to the complex relationship between the characters. This small interaction between the two as they explore magic addresses the strange lack of acknowledgment of the point earlier in the film when Elphaba slips away with Glinda's lover, Fiyero, to have a puppy to rescue a captured lion. Here, we see Glinda asking why Elphaba didn't ask her for help, and Elphaba apologizes and says she won't leave her behind anymore. In the final film, the two never discuss what happened. This would also have stopped the moment later when Elphaba takes Glinda with her to Emerald City to meet the Wizard. Seeing that this scene was shot and ready to go is an understatement. Yes, yes, you have to cut some things temporarily, but you're telling me that the duo fucking about with busted hot on a balloon in the last 20 minutes was more valuable than them putting out the their relationship?
Another cut interaction that would have added a lot to the film is one between Elphaba and Ethan Slater's Boq. The munchkin is the lover of Elphaba's sister, Nessarose, but he secretly harbors feelings for Glinda. Well, it's a mystery to Nessarose, anyway. In “Boq & Elphaba talk,” the Witch of the West talks to Boq about their hopes and dreams and how they are both hopelessly in love with two unavailable people. When Elphaba is unwilling to admit that she has feelings for Fiyero, Boq ends the conversation with a banger line: “I'm sorry, I didn't understand. I thought we were honest. ” Tea tuned.
Without spoiling anything for those who don't know anything about it Wickedlythe second act – which makes up the sequel film Bad Guy: Fine on November 21 – Boq is a very important character in what is to come. While the first film rightfully focuses on Elphaba and Glinda, their ensemble cast is going to go through some transformative experiences in the second film, and that might give them a little more time. gone a long way. At least we have those scenes on display in the special features. Even if they weren't in the final cut, you can pretty much consider them canon because they fit nicely into the movie we got.
